An “Open” Fantasy Story Concept

This last weekend I found myself digging through some boxes of old books in the garage looking for a specific book. Unfortunately, I didn’t find it. On the other hand, I did find a handful of books and old journals that I decided to return to my bookshelf. As I was flipping through one journal, I came across an idea for a story that I once had, but never fully fleshed-out. I have since gone in a different direction. I am building the structure of an entirely different story. Therefore, I am going to throw this idea out into the ether.

If you are looking for story concept that you can build from, and write a best-seller, maybe this idea will appeal to you. Here it is:

Genre:
I envisioned this “seedling” as a ‘pure fantasy,’ or possibly a ‘modern fantasy’ storyline. This would be a fantasy-styled story that, in some respects, parallels an individuals journey of discovery, spiritual growth, inward-upward-outward power, temptation, love and community conflict, and battle for life. While the concept and and element ‘phrasing’ runs along Judeo-Christian lines, it doesn’t have to develop in that direction.

Concept:
At the birth of every individual, their “gifting/calling” and the power potential of that gift is visible within the ‘spiros.’ While every individual has some ‘gifting,’ some who are blessed/cursed have the ability to tangibly wield/control their gifts, both within the spiros and the physical realms of reality. From the moment of birth, for both the protagonists, and antagonists, a battle is waged, in a sometimes subtle, sometimes blatant fashion, for the fulfillment, direction, and control of each persons gift. “There shall be twelve in every age…” 12 extra-anointed, spiritual, gifted, uniquely powerful, leaders of expansion, vision, and mission or destruction.

The Magic Button

(Welcome to “The Magic Button.” This is the start of group writing project. Similar to a ‘Mad-Libs’ style project, I’ve started with an idea, a couple of characters, and a potential plot-line. But, I’ve left it open-ended. Take the challenge. Take the “clay.” Mold it, shape it, make it your own, and then pass it on. Don’t be shy. Go for it…)

Uncomfortable on the big wool blanket, yet sleepily happy staring up at the stars, the two young sisters watched the occasional streak of light flash across the sky. Summer break had just begun, months of freedom stretched ahead of them, and they could sleep late in the morning. What could be better? Taylor, getting restless, complained “I wish we would see more meteors. This is starting to get a little boring. We should go inside and play Minecraft.” Zoe responded, “let’s wait ten more minutes. After dragging the blanket all the way out here we should at least stay more than five minutes.” Taylor, not really interested in staying outside, in the middle of the field, about a ten minute walk from grandma and grandpa’s house, groaned and flopped back down next to her sister. “Fine, five more minutes.” Continue reading
